Klein, Texas—Second-grade students at Epps Island and Greenwood Forest Elementary celebrated a major milestone in their reading journey through the CYCLE Bike program, earning brand-new bicycles for achieving their reading goals. The event brought together students, families, and volunteers in a heartwarming display of community commitment to literacy and student success.
One special volunteer, D’Hania Hunt, is an alumna of Epps Island Elementary and returned to share her personal story of how the very school she was volunteering at helped set her up for lifelong success.
“I started at Epps Island in the second grade in 1977,” Hunt said. “Here at this school, I learned about goal setting and figuring out the steps to get to where I want to be. That early lesson carried me all the way to a career in the Army for 23 years.”
Now living in the area once more, Hunt expressed her excitement about seeing young learners develop the same goal-setting habits through reading.
“I had to be over here at Epps Island and get to see these kids sowing into their futures, especially with reading,” Hunt said. “Reading is so important. The fact that they can have goals for reading will hopefully spark an eagerness for learning that they will continue for the rest of their lives.”
