From Classroom to Color Guard: Payton Grant Shines as a Leader at Klein Oak

Klein Oak High School Junior Payton Grant has been known for her academic excellence, consistently achieving throughout elementary, intermediate, and high school. A dedicated and well-rounded student, she takes pride in her coursework across a variety of subjects and enjoys the challenge of rigorous academics that encourage growth and critical thinking.

But this year introduced a new challenge and an unexpected opportunity for growth. “This year I’m taking pre-calculus, and I’ve always held myself to very high academic standards,” Payton said. “So earning a different result than I was used to was an adjustment.”

Despite the initial shock, Payton realized that though she had been working harder than ever, she was still not achieving her usual results.

“I started reflecting because I knew the material,” Payton said. “I was just making small, silly mistakes. Once I realized that, I stopped being so frustrated. Understanding the material makes me feel more accomplished than anything.”

In addition to her advanced coursework, Payton dedicates significant time to her art.

I make a point not to rush my art or my schoolwork,” Payton said. “I concentrate best in a school environment and use that time to maximize my focus.”

Payton’s love for art began long before high school.

“My first love for art began in elementary school, where the sweetest art teacher inspired me to create to my heart's desire. After she left our school, my love remained, and I began to explore other ways—doodling on papers, making small pieces at home as gifts, and drawing on almost any surface available,” she said. “When I got to intermediate school, the experience I had in elementary school made me choose art as my fine art before entering 6th grade.”

Throughout intermediate school, Payton’s artistic identity blossomed with encouragement from her mom and her art teacher, Mrs. Dudzik, whom she had for all three years.

“Mrs. Dudzik especially pushed me to become my best, helping me get into advanced art and eventually High School Art 1 in my 8th-grade year,” Payton said. “Most of my inspiration comes from those three years, when my support from her and my mom was unwavering—when I was still finding myself and how these wonderful people made me feel.”

Her artistic practice has shaped her academic resilience, teaching her patience, openness to feedback, and the importance of trusting the process.

“Long hours on an art piece have helped me with learning,” Payton said. “Critiques showed me that feedback is useful. Creativity has helped me develop new ways of studying, especially for harder classes.”

Although Payton describes herself as shy and sometimes socially awkward, Color Guard has become an essential part of her personal growth.

“Color Guard isn’t just spinning flags, it’s a performance sport,” she said. “You’re constantly connecting with huge audiences, and that makes you vulnerable.”

That vulnerability helped her rethink what mistakes mean.

“I’ve always hated presenting in class, even in small groups,” she said. “Color Guard forced me to confront that fear. Mistakes don’t mean failure; they mean progress and growth. The nerves will never completely go away, but I’m more comfortable now.”

Payton is involved in numerous student organizations and activities, including serving as the President of Black Student Union (BSU), HOSA, Science National Honor Society (SNHS), and the National Art Honor Society (NAHS). She is also active in Scholastic Art & Writing, United States Academic Decathlon (USAD), and Girl Scouts, where she is currently pursuing her Gold Award.

Balancing everything can be difficult, but Payton measures success by personal improvement.

“Being better than my last ‘best’ usually means feeling more confident in something,” Payton said. “I’m confident in my abilities, and I just want to feel that same confidence in myself.”

After high school, Payton hopes to attend a four-year university in California. Her long-term goal is to attend medical school and become a Pediatric Psychiatrist.

Payton credits her achievements and personal growth to her family's support.

“I want to thank my parents, especially my mom, for supporting me in absolutely everything I do,” Payton said. “She believes in me even when I don’t believe in myself. Without her, I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am today.”
